Philosophy

Computers evolved in the last century to store, process and deliver any kind of information more and more efficiently. Engineers have shaped the architetures of computers with this efficiensy in mind and have let designers to figure out how end users can interact with computers. In the 1970s personal computers became available that increased the impact of recent technologies in our culture in general.

In order to provide more space to other cultural values than technology based efficiensy like the ones in our literature and poems, Folt's main function is to turn the computer into a typewriter again with mailing support. However, it also takes into account our current culture where we would like to use the computer for many other things as well. While its elaborative documentation guides you through the whole system, its articles present computers in general in a way that your relation with it stays light.

"Folt" means patch or stain in Hungarian. It could have referred to both the problem and the solution in one, however it doesn't want to point to a problem nor wants to be a solution, it's more like an accident in a painting making it only more complete.

Folt aims to be GNU compliant, that said, source code of its softwares are available and free to edit, however supported firmwares that drive computer hardware components are usually binary only due to their manufacturers decision. It is inpired by Debian and diverged promptly.

The system

The kernel software that handles the communication between the hardware and other softwares (and does more) is Linux. Core utility softwares are borrowed from the GNU project. The graphical environment uses GNOME Foundation's software development libraries.

Software repository

Like many Linux distributions, Folt has a software repository with a collection of stable software binary, runtime library and their source code. The repository is available with description and link to the author's website or source host site.

Community

It is usual that users of an OS become more or less a community where they can share their knowledge and experiences or just talk about anything. Folt maintains a forum for this.

Licence

Folt cannot provide warranty for harm caused by software bugs, nor can state that it fits to any particular purpose. It, however, is based on a selection of mature and well maintained FOSS projects, it wills to help recover from crashes via the forum and to make a computer usable. It is under GPLv3 licence.
